“Just completed a pretty large electrical upgrade to my garage and installation of a heat pump. Joe and the crew were awesome and Joe spent a lot of personal time with me to plan the project. Really had a great experience from end to end with Krinkie's! Thank you!”

When to call a licensed electrician

Some electrical problems are early signs of a fire or shock hazard. The CPSC lists these home electrical warning signs:

  • Circuit breakers or fuses that need resetting frequently
  • Switch plates or outlet covers that feel hot to the touch
  • Lights that dim or flicker without a clear reason
  • An odor of overheated plastic near outlets or the panel
  • Sizzling or buzzing sounds, or flashes of sparks

If you notice any of these, have a licensed electrician check your system. The CPSC also suggests an inspection when it has been more than 10 years since the last one.

Permits and licensing in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) requires an electrical contractor license for anyone who contracts to do electrical work. DLI’s electrical permit instructions say the permit is filed at or before the start of the work. Wiring is inspected before it is concealed, and it needs a final inspection before it is used.

Homeowners can get a homeowner electrical permit to do their own work, but only on a home they own and occupy. It does not cover rentals, two-family dwellings or condo buildings. The same inspections apply.

Codes change over time. DLI states that electrical permits filed on or after Aug. 17, 2026 must comply with the 2026 National Electrical Code. Some cities run their own electrical inspections, so the inspector depends on your address.

Krinkie’s licensed electricians handle panels, service upgrades, lighting, circuits, EV chargers and repairs in existing homes. We don’t take on remodel or new construction projects. Book an electrical service visit online, or use our 24/7 emergency service for urgent problems.
